Autumn on the Trail

Autumn is an ideal time to get outside and enjoy the Northern Rail Trail. Cooler temperatures make for perfect walking and biking weather, and the changing leaves create a beautiful backdrop for every outing. Whether you’re taking a family stroll, meeting friends for a ride, or snapping fall photos along the way, there’s plenty of ways to get out on the trail. Thank you to everyone who’s been out exploring, sharing photos, and helping keep the trail in great shape for all to enjoy.

This season, one community member is taking her trail adventures even further — meet Patricia, who has set out to walk the entire Northern Rail Trail and share her journey along the way.

Local trail enthusiast Patricia von Mechow (The O.W.L. “Old Walking Lady”) has set a goal to walk the entire length of the Northern Rail Trail — and she’s documenting her journey along the way on Trail Finder! Follow her adventure and see the trail from start to finish through her photos and updates.

Joe Olimpio managed to mount a piece of the last rail pulled from the track in Boscawen and presented it to FNRT-MC co-founders Alex Bernhard and Myra Mayman in front of an appreciative crowd at FNRT’s Annual Volunteer Appreciation Potluck Supper at the Andover HUB on October 15, 2025.

Additional honorees that night were golden spike recipient 10 year FNRT Co-President Lindy Heim, Maintenance team member Carl Memmolo and Promo Committee members Rebecca Didier, Nina Deuterio and Janet Hunt. Team and committee members received gifts of the FNRT’s brand new doggie bandanas. “We love the chance to gather socially, celebrate this fine trail and recognize individuals for their exceptional effort,” Lindy said recalling the good vibes enjoyed by all that evening.

PBS recently released From Rails to Trails, a documentary narrated by Edward Norton that tells the story of how thousands of miles of abandoned railroads were transformed into walking and biking trails. It highlights the challenges, opposition, and persistence behind one of the most significant conservation movements in the country.
